Sunday Worship - September 24, 2006

At the call of Jesus Christ, we, the people

of Fraser Road United Church, seek to:

Welcome all;

Strengthen one another;

Nurture each other in faith

Prepare and direct our people into God's world for service.

* Please stand as you are able.

We Gather to Praise God

Musical Prelude

Greeting

Congregational Life and Work

*Passing the Peace of Christ

The peace of Christ be with you...

And also with you.

*Introit: Spirit Of Life - #381 VU

Spirit of Life, come unto me.

Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion.

Blow in the wind, rise in the sea;

move in the land, giving life the shape of justice.

Roots hold me close; wings set me free;

Spirit of Life, come to me, come to me.

*Call To Worship (Responsive)

The casual, thoughtful word of a good friend

can open up a way for us to encourage or to forgive.

The simple, generous act of a caring neighbor

can bring home to us the esteem in which we are held.

The carefully phrased note from a family member

can be the symbol of a love deep and profound.

And this time of worship - familiar, routine, imperfect -

can be a faithful reminder of God's wonderful love for us.

*Opening Prayer (Responsive)

The hug of a family member joyfully reunited

makes clear your wholehearted love for us, O God.

The singer bursting forth into glorious song

encourages us to praise and thank you without limit, O God.

The reader caught up in the pages of a great novel

inspires us to watch for your word in scripture and to find the message for us.

The researcher carefully exploring new territory

prompts us to look for fresh spiritual truth, unafraid of what might be revealed.

Jesus Christ, full of compassion; with clear intuition; honoring God's word; fearless, forgiving:

Jesus is our pattern as we worship. Amen.*Opening Hymn: "Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise" #264

Prayer of Confession (Responsive)

"Then he took a child and put it among them."

When we use long words and confusing sentences, put a child among us.

When we let the cares of the world drag us down, when the

demands of life seem overwhelming, put a child among us.

When we are tempted to deceive or to selfishly sway an opinion, put a child among us.

When we need love, recognition, or a great big hug, put a child among us.
When we need to get the values of church, family, or

community in proportion, put a child among us.

Time of reflection…

Words of Assurance

"Then he took a little child and put it among them."

The vulnerability and trust of children challenges our attitudes and our lifestyle; we are humbled!

Pardon and peace are yours, children of God.

Thanks be to God! Amen.

Acclamation: Halle, Halle, Halle....

* Hymn - The Wise May Bring Their Learning

The wise may bring their learning,

the rich may bring their gold;

and some may bring their greatness,

and glories new and old.

We too would bring our treasures to offer to the King;

we have no wealth nor wisdom;

what shall we children bring?

We'll bring him hearts that love him,

we'll bring him thankful praise,

and young souls meekly striving

to walk in holy ways.

And these shall be the treasures

we offer to the King,

and these are gifts that even

the poorest child may bring.

We'll bring the little duties,

we have to do each day;

we'll try our best to please him

at home, at school, at play.

And better are these treasures

to offer to our King,

than richest gifts without them;

yet these a child may bring.

Invitation to Offering

Offertory Ministry of Music For You I Am Praying

Presentation of Offering

*Doxology "Grant Us, God The Grace"- #540 VU

Grant us, God, the grace of giving,

with a spirit large and free,

that ourselves and all our living

we may offer faithfully.

*Offertory Prayer

As you increase our wisdom, loving God, so you increase our

vision of need.

We see the loneliness of some congregational members; we hear the call of children for a safe and fun place to hang out; we respond to the appeal of those who are sick or housebound for someone to listen to them; we recognize the desperation of refugees and the plight of the homeless.

Your gifts will be blessed by God, as they go to work to bring change.

Praise be to God! Amen.

Prayers of The People

The Lord's Prayer

*Hymn:- "May The God Of Hope Go With Us" - #424 VU

*Commissioning

Give us, O God, a childlike simplicity as we leave this faith community:

joy, in the unforeseen opportunities and blessings; simplicity, as we respond to need and cries for help; care, for the sad and afraid; wonder, in the face of nature's beauty; and peace, as we feel your love around us, O most loving God.

*Benediction

*Musical Postlude

TODAY IN PRAYER

We pray for school boards, teachers, children, and all those who need to experience God's loving Spirit.

Money never stays with me. It would burn me if it did. I throw it out of my hands as soon as possible, lest it should find its way into my heart. ~ John Wesley (1703-19), founder of Methodism
