Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: A New Creed #918

We are not alone, we live in God's world.

We believe in God:

who has created and is creating,

who has come in Jesus,

the Word made flesh,

to reconcile and make new,

who works in us and others by the Spirit.

We trust in God.

We are called to be the church:

to celebrate God's presence,

to live with respect in creation,

to love and serve others,

to seek justice and resist evil,

to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,

our judge and our hope.

In life, in death,

in life beyond death,

God is with us.

We are not alone.

Thanks be to God.

* CONGREGATIONAL PLEDGE

Congregation (unison):

As a baptized and baptizing church,

we commit ourselves

to support and uphold you

within the community of faith.

May God grant us all

the grace to live out our baptism.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

BLESSING OF THE WATER

In the beginning, when God created the universe,

Love was moving over the waters.

When a rainbow smiled above Noah's ark,

Love was moving over the waters.

When our ancestors fled from Pharaoh to the sea,

Love was moving over the waters.

When Jesus plunged into a life of healing and teaching,

Love was moving over the waters.

When we float in our mother's womb,

Love is moving over the waters.

When we are born anew by baptism,

Love is moving over the waters.

When justice flows and the thirsty drink deep,

Love is moving over the waters.

When tears of joy, hope, and sorrow mingle in worship,

Love is moving over the waters.

In the beginning, in the end,

Love is moving over the waters.

THE BAPTISM

All: Amen.

. . . are claimed as Christ's forever.

LAYING ON OF HANDS

Amen.

Minutes for Mission

Strength of the Spirit

The M&S Fund supports spiritual development, leadership training, and education. Here's a story from one of our education and retreat centres.

"The Lord is near to all who call, to all who call in truth."
----Psalm 145:18, adapted

We were the least likely spring staff to be chosen for maintenance, yet there we were, facing the daunting task of clearing Five Oaks' trail. Rakes, saws, and trimmers in hand, we cautiously began what would be our most significant project at the Centre. Being self-proclaimed "tree huggers" and English majors, what did we know about trail clearing?

It was tiring work, but the further we got into it, the more confident we became. Our hearts sank, though, as we stumbled upon a rotting tree, twice as tall as us and over a foot wide, directly in the path. Adam felt defeated and said we should ask for help from "real" maintenance staff, but Diane thought otherwise. "We can move it!" she declared, tossing off her work gloves. With our feet firmly planted, and the strength of the Spirit in our hearts, we brought down our mini-Goliath.

The Diane and Adam who first arrived at Five Oaks never would have believed they could overcome such a challenge. Working at the Centre has given us more confidence in ourselves and our abilities. We have also achieved a deeper spiritual connection with our Creator, who strengthens us when we feel overwhelmed. Most of all, our experience of moving the tree taught us that whatever our work at Five Oaks, we are clearing the path for future generations of youth and young adults.

Adam Mason and Diane Matheson are young adult leaders for children and youth programs at Five Oaks. The Centre is one of the United Church Education and Retreat Centres that receives funding from the Mission and Service Fund, and provides year-round programming for all ages.
