CONGREGATIONAL LIFE AND WORK
INTROIT: "Spirit of Life".......................................................#381
Spirit of Life, come unto me.
Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion.
Blow in the wind, rise in the sea;
move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.
Roots hold me close; wings set me free;
Spirit of Life, come to me, come to me.
*CALL TO WORSHIP (responsively):
All who thirst, come to the water
and drink deeply of these living streams.
Come, all who are weary;
come, all who yearn for forgiveness.
As the waters of the Jordan washed over Jesus,
so the Holy Spirit washed over you and me.
Our gracious God beckons and blesses us.
Let us give praise for new life in Christ.
*OPENING PRAYER (in unison)
Creator Spirit, moving over the waters,
you renew our baptism. God of the flood, you save us from
destruction. Holy Spirit, Jordan dove,
you came upon Jesus, descend now upon us.
Voice from heaven, call us by name.
We are your beloved. Amen.
*HYMN: "Shout for God" #246
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison):
Do you know the dryness of driftwood, O God? Do you know the
hopelessness we feel in the face of the illness and death of
people we love? of congregations we cherish? of values we
treasure? of communities near at hand and half a world away
who come to us through the news? We confess we often feel
overwhelmed and ignore your call to prophesy and to be
bearers of hope. May the dawn of your love and purpose break
upon us, through Christ, the resurrection and the life. AMEN.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
The waters of baptism refresh us and restore us to act with
power in God's purpose and love. Listen to its
free-flowing powers; Listen to its releasing powers; Listen
to its welcoming powers.
