MEMORIAL HYMN SING SERVICE

with Fraser Road United Church Choirs

May 28, 2006

At the call of Jesus Christ, we, the people

of Fraser Road United Church, seek to:

Welcome all;

Strengthen one another;

Nurture each other in faith;

Prepare and direct our people into God's world for service.

* indicates all who are able may stand

Prior to each hymn selection a candle will be lit.

ORGAN PRELUDE

* PROCESSION OF LIGHT AND WORD

* PROCESSIONAL HYMN

O Worship The King

O worship the King, all glorious above,

O gratefully sing God's power and God's love,

our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,

pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.

O tell of God's might, O sing of God's grace,

whose robe the light, whose canopy space,

whose chariots of wrath the deep thunder clouds form,

and broad is God's path on the wings of the storm.

The earth with its store of wonders untold,

Almighty, your power has founded of old,

has stablished it fast by a changeless decree,

and round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea.

Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite?

It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;

it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,

and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,

in you do we trust, nor find you to fail;

your mercies how tender, how firm to the end,

our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.

*GREETING (Heather MacDonald)

CONGREGATIONAL LIFE AND WORK

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

The peace of Christ be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU.

*CALL TO WORSHIP (responsive):

We gather to honour the lives of loved ones who have passed from us and to show support to one another.

We gather to express our belief in the power of Life, Love and Memory which are stronger than death and pain.

May this sacred place and our prayerful worship remind us of the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth;

May it renew our respect for the delicacy and preciousness of all life.

MEMORIAL HYMN

Those Hearts That We Have Treasured

Those hearts that we have treasured,

those lives that we have shared,

those loves that walked beside us,

those friends for whom we've cared,

their blessing rests upon us,

their life is memory,

their suffering is over,

their spirits are set free.

They still give hope and comfort,

they did not lose the fight,

they showed us truth and goodness,

they shine into our night,

Remember days of gladness;

remember times of joy;

remember all the moments

that grief cannot destroy.

From hearts that we have treasured,

from lives that we have shared,

from loves that walked beside us,

from friends for whom we've cared,

we've learned to treasure kindness,

we've learned that grace provides,

we've learned to be together,

we've learned that love abides.

SENIOR CHOIR Love Unknown

MEMORIAL HYMN

Because He Lives

God sent His Son, they called Him Jesus,

He came to love, heal, and forgive;

He lived and died to buy my pardon,

An empty grave is there to prove

my Saviour lives.

Refrain:

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,

Because He lives all fear is gone;

Because I know he holds the future.

And life is worth the living just because He lives.

How sweet to hold a new born baby,

And feel the pride, and joy he gives;

But greater still the calm assurance,

This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

And then one day I'll cross the river,

I'll fight life's final war with pain;

And then as death gives way to victory,

I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He lives.

MEMORIAL HYMN

Precious Memories

Precious Memories, unseen angels,

Sent from somewhere to my soul;

How they linger, ever near me,

and the sacred past unfold.

Refrain:

Precious memories, how they linger,

How they ever flood my soul,

In the stillness of the midnight,

Precious, sacred scenes unfold

Precious father, loving mother,

Fly across the lonely years;

And old home scenes of my childhood,

In fond memory appears.

In the stillness of the midnight,

Echoes from the past I hear;

Old time singing, gladness bringing,

From that lovely land somewhere.

As I travel on life's pathway,

Know not what the years may hold;

As I ponder, hope grows fonder,

Precious memories flood my soul.

PRAYER OF COMMEMORATION (in unison):

Loving God, before whose face the generations rise and pass away, we rejoice in the communion of saints. We remember before you those who have lived among us, who have directed our steps in ways of goodness, opened our eyes to the truth, inspired our hearts by their courage and strengthened our wills by their perseverance. Lift us into life and love. Grant that, following their example, we may run the race that is set before us and to your name, with the church on earth and the church in heaven, we ascribe all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER (sung)

MEMORIAL HYMN

In The Bulb There Is A Flower

In the bulb there is a flower;

in the seed, an apple tree;

in cocoons, a hidden promise:

butterflies will soon be free!

In the cold and snow of winter

there's a spring that waits to be,

unrevealed until its season,

something God alone can see.

There's a song in every silence,

seeking word and melody;

there's a dawn in every darkness,

bringing hope to you and me.

From the past will come the future;

what it holds, a mystery,

unrevealed until its season,

something God alone can see.

In our end is our beginning;

in our time, infinity;

in our doubt there is believing;

in our life, eternity.

In our death, a resurrection;

at the last, a victory,

unrevealed until its season,

something God alone can see.

PRESENTATION OF OFFERING

MEMORIAL ANTHEM (MEN'S CHOIR)

Shall We Gather At The River

*DOXOLOGY (#541 VU)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

praise Him, all creatures high and low;

give thanks to God in love made known;

Creator, Word, and Spirit One.

*OFFERTORY PRAYER (unison)

Gracious God, accept the gifts that we bring and bless our service in your name. May our voices sing your praise, our hands care for the suffering, our feet walk your paths faithfully, our hearts love you completely. All that we have is a gift from you. We offer ourselves in return, out of love for your world. Amen.

MEMORIAL HYMN

Until Then

My heart can sing when I pause to remember

A heartache here is but a stepping stone

Along a trail that's winding always upward,

This troubled world is not my final home.

Chorus:

But until then my heart will go on singing,

Until then with joy I'll carry on ---

Until the day my eyes behold the city

Until the day God calls me home.

The things of earth will dim and lose their value

If we recall they're borrowed for awhile;

And things of earth that cause the heart to tremble,

Remembered there will only bring a smile.

This weary world with all its toil and struggle

May take its toll of misery and strife;

The soul of man is like a waiting falcon;

When it's released, it's destined for the skies.

WHERE HAVE THEY GONE

Where have they gone

Those we love so dear

Who walked beside us

only yesterday or yesteryear

Free from all restraints of life

They've left behind this world of strife

AND

Soared on wings of joy

To meet the Saviour

Home on high

Just one more step

To see His blessed face

They go in haste

Toward the open door

God waits to greet them

Along with loved ones

Gone before.
