Sunday Worship - September 18, 2005
At the call of Jesus Christ, we, the people
of Fraser Road United Church, seek to:
Welcome all;
Strengthen one another;
Nurture each other in faith;
Prepare and direct our people
into God's world for service.
* Please stand as you are able.
WE GATHER AS GOD'S PEOPLE
Musical Prelude
Procession of the Light and Word
*Greeting
In the Spirit of Jesus Christ, who calls us to be the church and to celebrate God's presence, let us worship. [A special welcome to any visitors who are with us today]
*Passing of the Peace of Christ
Jesus said: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled or afraid."
The peace of Christ be with you all ...
And also with you.
Life and Work of the Congregation
Please refer to the list of announcements printed in your bulletins, taking note of those that apply to you. [Are there any announcements that need to be noted at this time?]
*Introit: #288 Great Is Thy Faithfulness {refrain 2X}
Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided
great is thy faithfulness, ever to me!
*Call to Worship (Stephanie & I Responsively)
People of God, look around and see the faces of those we know and love- neighbours and friends, sisters and brothers- a community of kindred hearts.
People of God, look around and see the faces of those we hardly know- strangers, visitors, forgotten friends- the ones who need an outstretched hand.
People of God, look around and see all the images of God assembled here.
In me, in you, in each of us, God's spirit shines for all to see.
People of God, come. Let us worship together.
*Prayer of Approach (Responsively)
Facing east
From the East, the direction of the rising sun, we receive peace and light and wisdom and knowledge.
We are grateful for these gifts, O God.
Facing south
From the South comes warmth, guidance, and the beginning and the end of life.
We are grateful for these gifts, O God.
Facing west
From the West comes the rain, purifying waters, to sustain all living things.
We are grateful for these gifts, O God.
Facing north
From the north comes the cold and mighty wind, the white snows, giving us strength and endurance.
We are grateful for these gifts, O God.
Facing upward
From the heavens we receive darkness and light, the air of your breath, and messages from your winged creatures.
We are grateful for these gifts, O God.
Facing downward
From the earth we come and to the earth we will return.
We are grateful for your creation, Mother Earth, O God.
{In unison}
May we walk good paths, O God, living on this earth as brothers and sisters should; rejoicing in one another's blessing, sympathizing in one another's sorrows, and together with you, renewing the face of the earth. Amen.
[Following Aboriginal tradition, praying in The Directions]
*Hymn: #703 In The Bulb There Is A Flower
1 In the bulb there is a flower;
in the seed, an apple tree;
in cocoons, a hidden promise:
butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter
there's a spring that waits to be,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.
2 There's a song in every silence,
seeking word and melody;
there's a dawn in every darkness,
bringing hope to you and me.
From the past will come the future;
what it holds, a mystery,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.
3 In our end is our beginning;
in our time, infinity;
in our doubt there is believing;
in our life, eternity.
In our death, a resurrection;
at the last, a victory,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.
Theme Conversation
Prayer of Confession (in unison)
Holy God, in earth, sea and sky,
you are there in everything we touch;
in everyone we meet;
your presence is 'round us,
and we give you thanks.
You we have not touched, but trampled, in creation;
you we have not met, but missed, in one another;
you we have not received, but rejected, in the poor.
Forgive us. Amen.
[Iona Community]
Words of Assurance
God is the love that over and around us lies; the grace that is totally unearned; and the healing that makes the earth whole. Give thanks to God; we are forgiven! Amen.
SERVICE OF THE WORD
Prayer for Illumination (in unison)
Loving God, you speak to us in so many ways: in the song of a bird, in the babbling of a brook, in the voices of our friends, in the hug from Mom or Dad, in the songs we sing, and in the stories of the Bible. Speak to us now through the reading of scripture. Help us to hear your voice and follow the way of Jesus. Amen.
First Reading: Exodus 16:2-15
Bread and quails to feed the people.
* Responsive Reading: Psalm 105, Parts 1 & 4 (VU p.828-829)
Make known what God has done.
REFRAIN: Bless God, my soul. Hallelujah!
Part One (1-11)
Give thanks and call on God's name.
Make known to the nations what God has done.
Sing, O sing the songs of praise;
tell of all God's wonderful deeds.
Exult in God's holy name;
let those who seek God be joyful in heart. R
Turn for help to the One who is your strength;
seek God's presence continually.
Remember the marvels the Most High has done,
the wonders and judgements God has given,
O children of Abraham and Sarah, God's servants,*
O offspring of Israel, chosen of God. R
You are the eternal God,
your justice reaches every corner of the earth.
You are ever mindful of your covenant,
the promise you gave to a thousand generations,
the covenant you made with Sarah and Abraham,
the oath you gave to Isaac.
You confirmed it for Jacob as binding.
To Israel your everlasting covenant you declared,
'To you I give the land of Canaan,
as your appointed inheritance.' R
Part Four (37-45)
You led Israel out, with spoil of silver and gold.
Among the tribes not one fell behind.
The Egyptians were glad when they went,
for dread of Israel had fallen upon them.
You spread cloud as a screen,
and fire as light by night.
The people asked, and you sent them quail;
you filled them with bread from heaven.
You opened a rock and water gushed out:
It flowed like a river through the arid land. R
For you remembered the sacred promise
you made to Abraham and Sarah, your servants.
You led out your people rejoicing,
your chosen ones with songs of gladness.
You gave them the lands of nations;
they took possession where others had toiled,
that they might keep your laws
and obey your teachings. R
MINISTRY OF MUSIC A Shelter In The Time Of Storm
The Lord's our rock, in Him we hide,
A shelter in the time of storm;
Secure whatever ill betide,
A shelter in the time of storm.
O Jesus is a rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
O, Jesus is a rock in a weary land
A shelter in the time of storm.
A shade by day, defense by night,
A shelter in the time of storm;
No fears alarm, no fears affright,
A shelter in the time of storm.
The raging storms may 'round us beat,
A shelter in the time of storm;
We'll never leave our sage retreat,
A shelter in the time of storm.
O Rock divine, O Refuge dear,
A shelter in the time of storm;
Be Thou our helper ever near,
A shelter in the time of storm.
Epistle Reading: Philippians 1:21-30
For me, to live is Christ.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 20: 1-16
Daily wages for the labourers; what's fair?
* Hymn: #338 Ask Me What Great Thing I Know
1 Ask me what great thing I know
that delights and stirs me so,
what the high reward I win,
whose the name I glory in:
Jesus Christ, the crucified.
2 Who defeats my fiercest foes?
Who consoles my saddest woes?
Who revives my fainting heart,
healing all that grief imparts?
Jesus Christ, the crucified.
3 Who is life in life to me?
Who the death of death will be?
Who holds all my days secure,
in God's heart where love is sure?
Jesus Christ, the crucified.
4 This is that great thing I know;
this delights and stirs me so:
faith in Christ who died to save,
Christ who triumphed o'er the grave,
Jesus Christ, the crucified.
Sermon: 'Recognizing Manna'
*Hymn: #460 All Who Hunger
1 All who hunger, gather gladly;
holy manna is our bread.
Come from wilderness and wandering.
Here, in truth, we will be fed.
You that yearn for days of fullness,
all around us is our food.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.
2 All who hunger, never strangers;
seeker, be a welcome guest.
Come from restlessness and roaming.
Here, in joy, we keep the feast.
We that once were lost and scattered
in communion's love have stood.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.
3 All who hunger, sing together;
Jesus Christ is living bread.
Come from loneliness and longing.
Here, in peace, we have been led.
Blest are those who from this table
live their lives in gratitude.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.
RESPONSE TO THE WORD
Offertory Invitation
Presentation of Offering
Offertory Ministry of Music The Longer I Serve Him
Since I started for the Kingdom,
Since my life He controls,
Since I gave my heart to Jesus,
The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows.
The longer I serve Him the sweeter He grows,
The more that I love Him, more love he bestows;
Each day is like heaven, my heart overflows,
The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows.
Every need He is supplying.
Plenteous grace He bestows;
Every day my way gets brighter,
The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows.
* Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise God all creatures high and low;
Give thanks to God in love made known;
Creator, Word and Spirit One.
* Prayer of Dedication of Gifts and Self
{insert own prayer}
Prayers Of The People/The Lord's Prayer:
{insert own prayer}
Let us join together in the Lord's prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen
THE SENDING FORTH
*Hymn: #633 Bless Now, O God, The Journey
1 Bless now, O God, the journey
that all your people make,
the path through noise and silence,
the way of give and take.
The trail is found in desert
and winds the mountain round,
then leads beside still waters,
the road where faith is found.
2 Bless sojourners and pilgrims
who share this winding way,
whose hope burns through the terrors,
whose love sustains the day.
We yearn for holy freedom
while often we are bound.
Together we are seeking
the road where faith is found.
3 Divine Eternal Lover,
you meet us on the road.
We wait for lands of promise
where milk and honey flow.
But waiting not for places,
you meet us all around.
Our covenant is written
on roads, as faith is found.
*Commissioning:
May the blessing of God,
the giver of every good and perfect gift;
and of Christ, who summons us to service;
and of the Holy Spirit, who inspires generosity and love, be with us all.
Benediction:
Go forth,
for the love of God is yours to share,
the peace of Christ is yours to extend,
the power of the Holy Spirit is yours to offer. Amen
